Butterfly update- Monday

On Saturday morning I woke up to all 4 butterflies. I have put lots of food in for them. One of them flies around the net all day! I hope you all have enjoyed watching them grow from tiny little caterpillars to massive caterpillars into their cocoons (chrysalis) and now into beautiful butterflies. I have been trying to get a picture of their wings however, every time I've tried they seem to know and close their wings. I will continue to try throughout this week. I plan to release them on Friday. I will put a video of them on here for you all to see. Below are some pictures of them from this morning! Hope you are all well, Miss Douse, Camilla, Izzy, Roger and Harry x

Edinburgh zoo are streaming live videos of some of their animals. Click the link below and choose an animal to look at (you can do more than one if you like). Could you describe what the animal looks like and the habitat that they live in. Remember to use adjectives, different/interesting sentence starters. Think about how the animal moves, what noises do they make? Can you see their food? Do they live alone? I have done an example of one that is below.

https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/

This week’s spellings are the months of the year (January-October). November and December are part of next weeks spellings. There is a handwriting activity, wordsearch and a Mr whoops’ juggling muddle, where you need to unscramble our spellings for this week.

Topic-History

Last week you looked at our current reigning Queen this week I would like you to go back 529 years! All the way back in 1491 when Henry VIII (8th) became king of England. Henry VIII is very famous as he had 6 wives! Below is a link of a video on Youtube of all the clips about Henry VIII and his life. There’s a very catchy song about his wives. Can you write a list of facts that you have learnt about Henry VIII.

Think about these questions- Do you think he was a kind man? Why do you think that? Do you think it is fair that he thought having a Queen taking over him would be a disaster? (There had not been a Queen ever before!)

If you would like to watch more horrible histories videos. All the series are currently on Netflix and series 3-8 are on BBC iplayer. There are also loads of clips and videos on the horrible histories Youtube.

Caterpillars- Thursday

Unfortunately there are no updates. They are exactly the same as they were last week. It can take between 7-21 days for them to emerge from their cocoons. Hopefully it won't much longer until we can see what they are like.

Caterpillars- Monday update

All 4 caterpillars are still wrapped up in their cocoons, turning themselves into beautiful butterflies. This could take 7-14 days. In the next few days I am going to be putting in some fruit, flowers and other types of food for them to eat. So that they have something to eat whilst they are growing a bit stronger.

Week 3- 15th June

Well done and keep up the great work!

If you have any questions about work or would just like to have a catch up please feel free to email me -

Maths

This week in Maths is shape. Children will be counting sides and vertices on 2D shapes, counting faces, edges and vertices on 3D shapes, sorting 2D and 3D shapes and merging 2D and 3D shapes. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/ - Home learning videos.

To help children keep going with their timestables the links below are songs for 2, 5 and 10 timestables that the children will be familiar with as we often listen to them in class. English

Last week in English you looked at Rapunzel by Bethan Woolvin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3TEDc4HAcc) and created a story map. This week I would like you to use your story map to re-write the Rapunzel. Make sure that you remember captial letters, full stops, no triangle of doom! How can you make your writing more interesting? Could you use adjectives to describe the setting, the character. Different conjunctions (and, because, while, when, but). Could you include how the characters are feeling? Below is a lined paper document you do not need to print, if you have lined paper at home.

https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

A summer reading challenge. This is a chance to encourage all children to read a little bit more. There are games and other activites for the children to enjoy as well. I know many of you enjoy reading. Please let me know if you decide to join the reading challenge and how you are getting on.

Below are also this weeks spellings. Another week of homophones and some conjunctions.

Topic- History

During Summer 2 in History we would be looking at Significant Kings and Queens. This week I would like you to look at our reigning Queen (Our current Queen), Queen Elizabeth II. Could you create a poster telling readers all about our reigning Queen.

I would like you to have a look on the internet and see what you can find out about Queen Elizabeth.

Below are some links you could use:

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/history/monarchy/facts-about-the-queen-elizabeth-ii/

https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/queen-elizabeth-ii

https://kids.kiddle.co/Elizabeth_II

I have also attached a powerpoint that has information about Queen Elizabeth.

Art

Could you use the skills you have started to develop in Art over the last few weeks and could you draw a picture of Queen Elizabeth II. Below are the same sheets you used for your own self-portaits.

Caterpillars - Friday

All 4 caterpillars are in their cocoons. It is now just time to wait for them to turn into beautiful butterflies. All 4 fell off the roof of the pot so I have transferred them on to a paper towel. The instructions said that if that happened to put them near the edge of the net so that they can climb up the net to dry out their wings.

Picture 1

Caterpillars- Wednesday

So they last few days the caterpillars have started to hang from the lid, in a j shape. 3 of the caterpillars formed their cocoon. However, one has been very naughty! When the caterpillar was still eating it would climb up to the top of the lid and knock the other caterpillars down. Now that caterpillar is the only one on the lid. Tomorrow, I am going to move them into the butterfly enclosure hopefully we will have some butterflies in the next few days.

Picture 1
Picture 2
Thank you for everyone that sent names in for the caterpillars. I am glad I didn't have to pick or the caterpillars would have had long names because they were all great. Below is the video where I picked out the caterpillars names. I have also uploaded some pictures as when I woke up this morning, one of the caterpillars is starting to  become a chrysalis. It is starting to make its cocoon. You can see in the pictures below one is dangling upside down, in the middle of the pot. Which means very soon we will have beautiful butterflies!

Maths

This week in Maths is fractions. We did cover this in school very practically, we used playdough and cake to cut into fractions. Again the videos are on https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/. The children will be looking at unit fractions, non-unit fractions, halves and quarters. See below the Maths sheets.

To help children keep going with their timestables the links below are songs for 2, 5 and 10 timestables that the children will be familiar with as we often listen to them in class. I have also attached 3 times table please only go onto these if your child is confident with 2s, 5s and 10s and is able to tell you 4X5 etc

English

This week I would like you to look at Rapunzel by Bethan Woolvin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3TEDc4HAcc

When you are watching the video, have a think what is different to the original story of Rapunzel that you know?

I would like you to draw a story map of what happens in Rapunzel. Think of around 6 different parts of the story and draw them in sequence using arrows to connect them. Under each picture, write a short sentence explaining what happens in that part of the story. Go through your story map with your grown-up and tell them the story again. Below is a storyboard template.

Spellings

This weeks spellings are homophones and near homophones again. I have attached the worksheets and powerpoint related to the spellings.

Topic- History

During Summer 2 in History we would be looking at Significant Kings and Queens. This week I would like you to look at what the role of a monarch is and what qualities they would need to be a good monarch. A monarch is a head of state (someone in charge) particularly a King or a Queen. Our reigning monarch is Queen Elizabeth II.

Below is a powerpoint that explains the role of the monarch and some rules that they may implement. I would like you to take the role of a King or a Queen. On the sheet below are some rules. I would like you to decide if you think they are good rules that you would have or bad rules that you wouldn't put in place if you were a monarch. There is some room for you to add on your own rules.

If you can think of a few rules that you would like to have as King or Queen, then you could write them as a list, instead of squishing them onto the sheet.

Our caterpillars are definitely getting bigger and bigger and longer and longer each day. And they are starting to eat a lot of their food. You are now able to see their legs very clearly. If you have any name suggestions please email me! I will be drawing the names out on Sunday so that on Monday morning you will be able to see what their names are. I've already had some great suggestions!

Our Caterpillars have grown so much over the weekend. Every morning I get up and go an check on them to see how much they have grown and how much food they have eaten. The brown stuff at the bottom of the pot is food that the caterpillars eat. One caterpillar is getting big. The caterpillars are getting very long and you can start to see some of their features. I can't wait to see them grow into big caterpillars! If you have any ideas for names please let me know as they are currently nameless. I will put all names recommended into a bowl and pick them at random.
