Summer 2

Summer 2 - Week 7 - 13th July

Good Morning everyone, I can't quite believe that it is the last week before the Summer holidays. What a year! Hopefully the children will be able to remember the lovely times they had in year 1. They have all enjoyed the last 3 weeks and although its sad we can't all be together, they've enjoyed being back in school catching up with each other. Thank you all for your support over the year and I wish all the children all the very best for Year 2. I have uploaded some school work to keep them ticking over this week. I hope you all have a great Summer... stay safe everyone.

Hugs.

Miss Anderson

Reading

This is a excellent resource for continuing reading through the Summer, if you wish. It allows you to access the Read, Write, Inc books that we use in school online.

Maths - Time

By the end of Year 1, children should have had some experience at telling the time. The children should be able to use language related to time correctly and be able to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour. If the children need an extra challenge they children could begin to learn to tell the time by quarter to, quarter past, five to and five past. This can be taught practically, but I have included some work sheets below.

The children have enjoyed watching Blue Peter on an afternoon and at the moment they have an 'Earn a Badge' competition. Here are some example of how the children could earn a Blue Peter badge... more information available at https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/joinin/about-blue-peter-badges

Summer 2 - Week 6 - 6th July

Hello everyone, It was so lovely for Miss Douse and I to have the Year 1 children back this week in our bubbles. The children all had a wonderful time, catching up and chatting with each other.  We were having so much fun... I forgot to take any photographs.  Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have at Stephanie.Anderson@waverley.newcastle.sch.uk. I will continue to post the White Rose Maths work and Spellings online for the children to complete when they are not in school.

Thank you,

Miss Anderson

Maths

This week on the White Rose Maths work, the children will be learning about position and direction. Learning to describe the position of something in relation to left and right and using language such as top, bottom, above, below and between. This work can also be carried out practically with any objects around the house.

Have fun with learning which way is left and right by doing the Cha Cha slide...

Summer 2 - Week 5 - 29th June

Hello everyone, this week the Year 1 bubbles have opened at school for the children to attend school for 2 days a week (if you wish for your child to attend). I will still be uploading some school work for the children to complete at home, if you wish them to, for the days they are not at school. Any questions please just drop me an email at Stephanie.Anderson@waverley.newcastle.sch.uk.

Hope you all have a great week and I am very much looking forward to welcoming Year 1 back.

Miss Anderson

Maths

White Rose Maths this week covers the topic of Money.  This is usually taught in school with children touching real coins and notes, however, due to current circumstances we are unable to do this. The children would of been able to recognise different amounts, sort the coins and begin to add the coins together. I have included some worksheets and activities around the topic of money below. Please pick and choose which activities to complete, they do not all need to be completed and these can be completed practically if you wish.

There are videos and games relating to money at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs8F_g3MGtM

Spellings

I have given two options, so please just pick one set of spellings for your child, option 2 are more of a challenge. Any questions about these, please just drop me an email.

Summer Term 2 - Week 4 - 22nd June

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who have been emailing me and keeping me updated with the children's activities and well-being throughout this home-schooling period.

Take care,

Miss Anderson

Maths

This week the children are going to be learning place value to 100, becoming familiar with the 100 square, partitioning and comparing numbers to 100.

I have also included a 'flashback' challenge Powerpoint, which covers a range of activities.

The online videos can be accessed at https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/

An online game to support confidence and recognition of numbers in a 100 square is available at https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares. You could challenge your child to splat directed numbers, splat all numbers in the 10 times table (or counting in 10's). Splat all the numbers that have 2 tens in the number eg 21, 22, 23 etc. Splat all the numbers that have 7 units in the number eg 17, 27, 37 etc.

Practically you could get your children to write numbers 1-10 on a strip of paper, then 11-20 on a separate piece of paper, then 21-30 on another and so on until they can make their own 100 square. You could challenge your child to close their eyes and mix them all up and ask them to put the 100 square back together. All things to support them becoming visually familiar with a 100 square. Create your own place value cards on plain bits of paper or coloured post it notes. Challenge your child to make the number 27 by placing the 7 on top of the 20 in the units column. I have included an example below...

English

This week our Katie Morag story is called Katie Morag Delivers the Mail. Available at... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORSXhAl8TW8

Activity 1

Can you challenge you child to write some sentences as a recount about Katie Morag's trip around the island to deliver the mail? Ask them to think about what she did and where did she go when delivering the mail? Challenge the children include the words first, next, then, after that and finally and write in the past tense... I have given an example below...

Katie Morag set off to deliver the mail around the island. First she stopped to paddle in a pool below the Red Burn Bridge, but she slipped and fell into the water. Then she ran around the island throwing any parcel onto door steps. After that she ran to Grannie Islands house to explain what she had done.

Activity 2

Children can write their own address labels using their imagination and role play the story. They could pretend they are Katie Morag and mix up all the addressed parcels.

Spellings

I have given two options, so please just pick one set of spellings for your child, option 2 are more of a challenge. Any questions about these, please just drop me an email.

Reading Comprehension

This activity can be completed by reading the text online and by asking the questions about what they have read, it does not need to be printed if you do not have access to a printer. Please support your child to read the information if they can not read it independently.

Science

In school, our Science work would have had an a learning objective of 'I can identify and sort carnivores, herbivores and omnivores'. We would have had discussions around the meaning of each type of animal, discussing their eating habits. If you can't print these worksheets, they can be completed by discussion or the sorting activity can be completed on plain paper by creating a heading for Carnivores, Herbivores and Omnivores and then the children can draw the animals once they have sorted them into the correct group.

Activity 1

Can the children choose an animal and complete the fact file?

Activity 2

Can the children sort the animals into the correct group?

Hope you have a great week.

Miss Anderson

Summer Term 2 - Week 3 - 15th June

Hello to all and a new week. How are the children getting on at home this week? As always if you have any questions my email address is stephanie.anderson@waverley.newcastle.sch.uk

Stay Safe,

Miss Anderson

Maths

In Maths this week, the children are challenged to multiplication and division activities by making arrays, doubling, halving, sharing and grouping. The lesson videos are available at https://resources.whiterosemaths.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Year-1-Week-8.pdf

You could try to do this practically with household items eg socks. Challenge the children to create an array (equal lines of objects) with socks on the living room floor, double the amount of socks, group socks together and share out the pairs of socks to each person in your house. If you have been baking, you could do this with some cookies or sweet treats.

English

Watch Katie Morag and the Big Boy Cousins at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBC4swn2pBo and discuss what happens in the story, where the story is set, who are the characters we meet in this story? Can the children recall the story in their own words and say what happens at the beginning, middle and end of the story?

Activity 1

Pause the video at the image at the end of the story (6.28 minutes), on a plain piece of paper challenge the children to write some sentences about the image, what is happening? Which characters can they see? Where are they and what are they doing? Which is your favourite character and why?

Activity 2

Can you make a list of the food items you would have if you were having a feast of your own? Use your imagination to think of your favourite things and maybe things that may not go together eg jam and cheese sandwiches at your own feast.

Activity 3

If you wish to challenge your child further, you could ask them to create a story map (where the children draw pictures to describe each event in the story) and use this to help them to rewrite the story, using story language such as 'Once upon a time, one sunny day, suddenly'.

Spellings

I have given two options, so please just pick one set of spellings for your child, option 2 are more of a challenge. Any questions about these, please just drop me an email.

PHSE

There is a lovely story called 'Ruby's Worry', in the story it talks about how a worry can grow and get bigger, however if you talk about it, it helps to make the worry get smaller. Watch the story at https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00097dk/cbeebies-bedtime-stories-725-katie-piper-rubys-worry and discuss. You could ask your child to draw a picture to see if they have a worry, how big their worry is or what they are worried about, if you feel they may need this activity.

As the link for the lovely Katie Piper reading 'Ruby's Worry' expires next Wednesday, I thought I would try to read it myself to the children. Click on the link ... hopefully it works. https://app.seesaw.me/#/class/class.20136289-3555-48a0-bdaf-5597810d612b

Hope all all have a great week.

Miss Anderson

Summer Term 2 - Week 2 - 8th June

Good morning, please just pick and choose activities for your child, you do not have to complete all of the activities. From the emails I am receiving, it seems that the children are enjoying completing some of the activities, along with lots of other fun things like baking, Science experiments, building dens and lots of exercise.

Stay safe everyone,

Miss Anderson

Maths

This week on White Rose Maths, the children have already completed lessons 1 and 2 in school on counting in 2's and 10's. So I have uploaded Lessons 3 and 4 (counting in 10's and adding equal groups) for the children to complete, along with two revision lessons on Place Value to 50.

Videos for the lessons can found at https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/

English

This term we would have been looking at a collection of stories by Mariri Hedderwick called The Katie Morag stories. The stories are about a young Scottish girl, set on the fictional Isle of Struay (which is based on the Scottish Highlands Islands).

Watch the first story at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQrqNDAbanE

This weeks task will be to write some sentences about the story to create a review. There is a prompt sheet attached below for questions, however, the children can complete these sentences on plain paper if you can't print the sheet.

Spellings

I have given two options, so please just pick one set of spellings for your child, option 2 are more of a challenge. Any questions about these, please just drop me an email, (I have saved them in PDF as well if that is easier to print).

Geography

Thinking about our class story this week Katie Morag and the New Pier, the character lives on a island. I have attached a PowerPoint below all about islands, please talk to your child about the features of an island, where are islands, what are the similarities and differences of islands. The story is set on a fictional island based of the coast of Scotland, can the children use Google Maps/ Google Earth to find the Scottish Highland Islands? Where are they in relation to where we live in Newcastle?

I have also attached a map of The Isle of Struay, the island in which Katie Morag lives on. Can the children create their own map of the island on a plain piece of paper? Or as a further challenge they could create a map of a chosen Scottish Highland Island, that they have found and researched on Google Maps eg create a map of the Isle of Coll.

DT/ Art

Thinking about the Isle of Struay and the new pier being built, meaning that extra visitors and tourists can come to stay on the island, can the children design something for them to stay in? It could be a hotel, a camping/ caravan site or some holiday homes. challenge the children to draw and label this or they could even create their own using junk modelling or playdough materials (only if you have them available, please don't feel the need to buy some). Happy designing!

Hope you all have a good week.

Stay safe x

Position and Direction Activities

English

This week in English, I would like to challenge the children to write some instructions... it may be instructions on how to make something like a cake (if you have been cooking or baking) or if you have been crafting, the instructions could be to inform of how to make an egg box rocket, or a shoe box under the sea scene, or it could be instructions on how to make a den. I have attached some template sheets below.

Spellings

We have now finished the Year 1 spelling programme for this year, so spellings will now be given from common exception words that do not follow a spelling pattern rule (tricky words). I have given two options, so please just pick one set of spellings for your child, option 2 are more of a challenge. Any questions about these, please just drop me an email.

Science

This week in Science the learning objective question would have been...  Are there different kinds of animals? With the aim of children grouping animals by similarity or difference by using Science terms to describe them eg Reptiles, Mammals, Amphibians, fish or birds. Below I have attached some activities and cards which describe each animal group.

If anyone would like to do any bird spotting from their garden...
