Spring 2 week 4- 16th - 20th March 2020
This week the children started their practice SATs papers, in SPAG, Maths and Reading. When the children were not carrying this out we looked at the skills that were needed to ensure that they were able to successfully complete the assessments. In science we looked at animals in their habitats we looked in the bushes and the garden to see if we could find any insects and discuss why they live there. We have also learnt about the importance of Easter to Christians. We looked at the Easter Story and wrote it our own words.
On Friday we had an Easter craft morning. The children reread the Easter Story and then completed word searches, colouring and creating their own Easter Bunny.
I have realised that I have sent the wrong email out for LEXIA. Please follow this link to access LEXIA at home. https://www.lexiacore5.com/
There are also apps for Ipads, tablets and SMARTphones for LEXIA and Timetable Rockstars.
On the class pages- under studying at home I will put some information regarding what topics the children will be missing.
Spring 2 week 3- 9th - 13th March 2020
This week we finished reading 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. At the beginning of the week we wrote predictions for the end of the story. Once we had finished reading the story we discussed what we knew about the main character Max. We then had an outline of a hedgehog. On the inside we wrote what we know about Max and on the outside we wrote questions that we would like to ask him. We then carried out a hot seat, where the children in turns became Max and answered some of our questions.
In Maths this week we have been going over key skills in preparation for our practice SATs week next week. We have learnt how to use column addition and subtracting even crossing the tens!! This was difficult to start with as for the majority of the children this was their first time. However, once we had completed them a few times the children grasped the idea and completed lots of questions to help consolidate.
This week was also Sports Relief. With Year 1 we went down to the gym and danced non-stop for half an hour. As you can tell by the photos we all had a great time!
Spring 2 week 2- 2nd- 6th March 2020
This week in Maths the children have been learning about position and direction. We have learnt our lefts and rights and have been able to direct our partner around an obstacle course. In English we have been reading the 'Hodgeheg' By Dick King Smith. This is the first chapter book that we have read this year as a core text. The children are excited to find out what happens to Max at the end of the story. The book is based on a hedgehog that doesn't understand how humans cross the road.
In Science we have identified and classified objects into living, non-living and never lived. We have learnt about the seven life processes (MRS NERG) and even came up with actions to help us remember them. In Geography, we became researchers. We used the ipads, books and information leaflets to create a poster about the Galapagos Islands. Many of the children had not heard of them and therefore they enjoyed taking the lead in their learning.
This week was World Book Day, we celebrate this over 2 days. On Thursday the children got the chance to read a range of different books within English. There task was to find 3 books that they would take if they had to live on a desert island for a year. The children enjoyed having some time to read books that they enjoyed. On Friday, the children chose an activity based on some of the teachers in KS1 favourite books, Harry Potter, The wonky donkey and Charlie and the chocolate factory. The children made golden snitches, chocolate bars and their very own wonky donkey. It was fantastic to see how well Year 1 and Year 2 mixed together and it was clear to see by the smiles on their faces how much they enjoyed the morning.
Well done Year 2! We won two trophies this week! Best attendance and the early bird trophy!
