Spring 1- Week 6- 10th - 14th February
This week in Maths we have continued through with fractions. This week the children have been looking at equivalent fractions. We have looked at the fact that 2 quarters is the same as 1 half. This week we have moved onto finding fractions of numbers.
In English we wrote our story that we planned last week. The children wrote an innovated story of the Owl Babies, they changed the character and setting of the story.
In Science this week we have looked at exercise and what effects different types of exercise have on our bodies. We challenged ourselves to complete an additional 5 minutes of exercise as a class each day.
This week we had some visitors from the RNLI. They came and did a session with KS1 about water safety.
There is homework over the holidays. New spellings will go out on the first Monday back. Have a lovely half term!
Spring 1- Week 5- 3rd - 7th February
This week in Maths we have been looking at fractions. We started the week using play dough and cutting it into different fractions. We have been looking at halves, quarters and thirds. We have started to look at non-unit fractions but will build on this further next week.
In English this week we have been planning our innovated story of the Owl Babies. The children have made their characters, and have planned their setting, in preparation for writing our stories for next week.
This week in topic we have been learning about different places of worship with a particular focus on the Jewish Synagogue. We learnt all about the different features and where to find them. In Art this week we looked at African patterns. We discussed the different shapes that we might find, then the children created their own African patterns.
In Science we have been looking at exercise. We have looked at different types of exercise and what they do to our body. We have set ourselves a challenge, as a class we are going to do 10 minutes of exercise each morning. We will then record this into our Science books.
Spring 1- Week 4- 27th-31st January
This week in English we have been reading Owl babies. We discussed where the book was set and planned and wrote our own setting descriptions. We looked at different adjectives and similes that we could use within our work. In Maths this week we looked at 3D shapes. We identified them based on their faces, edges and vertices. At the end of the week we moved onto looking at lines of symmetry, the children drew lines of symmetry onto shapes that they were familiar with.
In topic this week we have discussed what we need to stay fit and healthy. We looked at what kind of food we should eat and what we should drink. We learnt all about the different food groups and what types of food are in the categories. In Geography we learnt all about Dubai. We discussed the temperature and what it would be like to live in Dubai. We then compared Dubai to Iceland. In Art we looked at pattern in nature. We discussed what patterns we see for example, zebra skin, raindrops. We then gathered leaves in the yard and brought them into look at the patterns closer.
Spring 1- Week 3- 20th-24th January
This week in Maths the children have been looking at 2D shapes. We have recognised and identified the properties of the 2D shapes. We have then sorted 2D shapes using their properties. The children have then looked at patterns and have made some patterns using 2D shapes.
In English this week we are reading 'The owl babies'. The children have enjoyed reading this book and looking at the characters feelings. We described how the characters have felt through different parts of the story. We then wrote a diary entry as one of the owl babies, describing how we felt when we didn't know where Mum was.
In topic this week the children have started to look at countries that Barnaby bear has travelled to. This week the children looked at Iceland, we discussed what the weather was like and looked at the different landmarks within the country. On Thursday, we had a visitor from the council who came in to discuss recycling and other ways that we could help save our planet. The children got the chance to sort rubbish into a recycling bin.
Spring 1- Week 2- 13th-17th January
This week in maths we have been looking at statistics and data. The children have looked at different types of graphs interpreted them and drew their own. We have looked a pictograms, bar charts, tally charts. We have gathered data in our class on shoe size and have turned the data into a chart in Science. In RE we had a discussion on Moses, we created a bank of ideas that we already knew about him. We then had a look at Moses's story and ordered the story in our books.
In English this week we have designed our very own superhero, who helps our world by recycling. We drew our character, then wrote adjective about our character. Finally, this week we wrote a character description about our superhero. What they look like, what they act like and some children wrote some similes to describe how they move.
Spring 1- Week 1- 6th-10th January
I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas.
In English this week we have been reading the book '10 things I can do to help my world' by Melanie Walsh. We have been looking at the individual things that we can do to help the world. The children came up with some lovely ideas on what we could do as a class to help the environment and the world around us. Within topic (Geography and History) we are looking at famous people that help our world. The children got given clues to a famous person and had to work out who we will be learning about. The children knew straight away we were learning about David Attenborough.
In Maths this week we have been learning to divide by grouping and by sharing. The children have enjoyed practically learning this skill before putting what they have learnt into their books. The children have really enjoyed learning how to divide a number by using these methods. In Science we are starting a topic on Animals. The children looked at the term offspring, and matched animals to their offspring. We then discuss that what happens when we grow and looked at the life stages of a human.
