Autumn 1

Week 7- 19th-23rd October

 

We have had a fantastic last week. We have used number lines to help add and subtract numbers. We have also written our very own version of The three little wolves and the big bad pig. They were fantastic!! We have also been doing some halloween crafts this week. We have made paper chains, designed our own pumpkin and coloured by addition. 

 

We have had a great time at our halloween disco on Friday. The children's costumes were great!! 

 

The children do have homework over the half term. Also over the half term could you have a little go at logging into Seesaw. I will put up an activity for the children to complete, so that they can get used to using all the tools on the website.

Week 6- 12th - 16th October

 

This week in Maths we have been recapping our number bonds to 10, 20 and 100. We have used related facts to help us with our number bonds to 100. We have used a number line to help us add and subtract ones, crossing over a ten. As well as, completing some reasoning and problem solving questions to do with 10 more and 10 less. 

 

In English this week we have been reading 'Mr Wolf and the three bears' by Jan Fearnley. In the story Mr Wolf is making food for baby bears birthday party. We have looked at the features that make a recipe, we then made Huff Puff cakes from the story in the Science Hub and then wrote out the recipe remembering our imperative verbs (Bossy verbs). 

 

In History this week, we looked at Mount Rushmore and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We discussed the presidents whose faces are carved out of the mountain. We had a look at both Mount Rushmore and the Leaning Tower of Pisa on Google Earth and discussed their location compared to where we are in the world. 

In Art this week we started to look at one of our artists for the year, Piet Mondrian. We learnt facts about him and then looked at some of his work. We then had a go ourselves and have made some fantastic pieces! 

Week 5- 5th - 9th October 2020 

 

This week we have been looking at alternate fairytales. We have looked at the differences and similarities between Cinderella and Prince Cinders. We have also looked at diary entries and have written a diary entry as Prince Cinders. 

In Maths we have started looking at addition and subtraction. We have looked at fact families and compared number sentences.

 

In Science this week we have carried out a comparative experiment. We got a letter from Erin asking us to help her find a material to fix her boat. We used science equipment and then lots of different materials so we could help her. We used pipettes to drop water onto the different materials, using our scientific language to explain what happened. 

 

In art this week, mixed colours little by little to show how colours mixed together make lots of different shades. In PSHE we looked at things that make us happy, ahead of World Mental health day on Saturday.

Week 4 - 28th September - 2nd October 

 

Week 4 has been great in school. In Maths we have finished our place value block. We ordered and compared object and numbers. In English this week we have carried on with the Secret of Black Rock. We became Black Rock and wrote a letter to Erin thanking her for saving us from the fishermen. We also did a story map for the book and then wrote the story in our own words. Everyone did FANTASTIC! Mrs Robson and I were both so happy with everyones writing. I have put a few pictures below (I can definitely say that I am not an artist, see class story map). 

 

This week we have also completed our Christmas card templates so that they can be prepared and samples made to be sent home. This week in topic we have looked and investigated the Great Wall of China. We had a look on google earth and then found out some facts about the Great Wall of China. In Science we looked at materials. We looked around the classroom and found different items made out of lots of different materials. During PSHE, we read the Colour Monster by Anna LLenas. We discussed how the colour monsters feelings got all mixed up and what to do if we feel like that. The children then all coloured in their very own colour monster using how they were feeling. 

 

In class we have been learning our 2, 5 and 10 timestables. The children love the songs we are learning from and have asked if I will put links on the website. Here they are;

Week 3 - 21st - 25th September 2020 

 

Well another week is done... The children this week have been great. This week in English we have looked at setting descriptions. We have looked at what makes a good setting description. We planned our very own setting description for our story, The Secret of Black Rock. The children were asked to write their own setting description, using adjectives, some children even used similes! This week we also started Guided reading, children in groups came and read with myself and Mrs Robson, whilst the children waited for their turn they completed reading comprehensions, handwriting and even began learning their spellings for next week. 

 

Maths this week we have been looking at tens and ones and part whole model. The children picked this up really quickly and we were able to complete a part whole model for numbers in the hundreds. We looked at partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and units as well as building them. 

 

In topic this week we have looked at greenhouse gases and what they do to our world. The children were able to discuss how green house gases get trapped and where they come from. In Science we looked at different types of materials and started to discuss what we can make using different types. In RE this week we looked at the prodigal son, we were able to retell the story in our own words and reorder the story. In Art we painted our own pictures using the brush strokes we learnt last week.

Week 2- 14th- 18th September 

 

This week is assessment week in school. The children have been brilliant they have all tried their hardest. There has been lots of new vocabulary thrown at the children this week and they have coped well. The assessments were done to help us find and identify gaps in what they have missed in year 1. The assessments were in Maths, Reading and SPAG. 

 

In the afternoons this week we have had time to relax after our assessments in the morning. On Monday we went into the gym and played some parachute games. On Tuesday we completed RE work and had a great afternoon break using some PE equipment. On Thursday we looked at different paint brushes and what patterns and marks they could make on a piece of paper. Some of us even

started our very own paintings (Mrs Lynch thought our Art work was brilliant!).  

 

 

 

Week 1- 7th-11th September 

 

We have had a great first week in school. All the children have settled well into Year 2 life. In Maths we have started to look at place value. Looking at how many 10s and how many ones are in a number. We have also started to look at how we write numbers 17 - seventeen. 

 

In English we have started to look at 'The secret of black rock' by Joe Todd-Stanton. This week we have looked at the main character Erin and wrote a character description about how she looks and her actions and how we would describe her as a person. The children have used lots of fantastic adjectives to describe her clothing. We have thought of Erin's feeling during different parts of the story. 

 

This week in topic we have started to look at global warming and what we can do to help the world. We discussed what happens in the world because of global warming and small steps that we can help do to help. 

 

Homework and spellings have gone home this week. Spelling tests are on Fridays. Homework is due in on Wednesdays. Reading books will be handed out on Monday.
